Electric Voice Phenomenon are recordings of voices on frequencies well below the range of sound audible to the human ear.  EVP are usually brief, the length of a word or short phrase, most of which are not heard until the recording is played back.

Attempts began as early as the 1920s, but certain success was reached in 1956 using a reel to reel tape recorder.  In 1959, film maker Friedrich Jurgensen discovered strange voices while recording bird songs.  In 1967 Thomas Edison made suggestions on how to modify TV sets to get paranormal effects.  1978  saw the construction of the Spiricom by William Oneil, who’s specifications he received from George Mueller, who had died six years previously.  In 1982 Sarah Estep begins the American Association of EVP.  Kenneth Webster of England receives 250 communications from a person who lived in the 16th century in 1984 using several different computers.

Portable digital voice recorders are the current choice of technology for investigators.  The founders of CPEAR did a test with two digital recorders in the summer of 2008 in the basement of their home where paranormal activity has been experienced, recording a series of questions into one and leaving a good size gap in between questions for possible answers.  They then set the two recorders hitting play on one and record on the other and left the house.  They were excited to find they had captured EVPs  this way and have been using this method periodically since. Since this was done, it has caught on in the field and is currently being tested.

Anyone interested in making their own ghost voice recordings should keep in mind a few things:
1) You don’t need expensive devices, you can capture EVPs using a digital recorder and even a standard tape recorder.  Just be sure to use new tapes.

2) EVPs can be captured anywhere.  Please don’t trespass into cemeteries or abandon buildings.  Along with possible EVPs you could also capture yourself a nice big fine.

3) Document everything, ie: weather conditions, time of day/night, where you are, and who is with you.

4) Be patient, take your time.  Remember, in most cases you won’t know if you’ve captured any voices until you play back your recordings.

To date, EVP experiments world wide have produced more evidence of and afterlife than any other paranormal research.
